It is located on the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin, south of St. Paul, and is home to the University of Wisconsin - Duluth and Minnesota State University. Sauk Rapids was the first house built there in 1851, a large mansion called Lynden Terrace built by W.H. Wood.

Soon more settlers followed and the city was named Sauk Rapids, and soon after more settlers followed. Downtown Sauk Rapids has changed a lot over the years, as has the city as a whole, with the construction of the Minnesota State University campus. The intersection of Benton Drive and 2nd Street has also been adapted for a new bridge that would extend the railway tracks. This has significantly increased the number of cars on the roads and in traffic.
